City of Atlanta Dept of HR Commissioner Yvonne Cowser Yancy

City of Atlanta/ Department of Human Resources Commissioner Yvonne Cowser Yancy joined us in the studio to discuss the important role City of Atlanta’s employees in the City’ success and what the Department of Human Resources does to attract and retain talented, engaged, happy, healthy employees and why that is a top priority.

 

Yvonne Cowser Yancy is a Human Resources professional with 16+ years of diverse experience within the public and private sector and within union and non union environments. Over her career she has held progressively more responsible roles in HR and has demonstrated the capability to design and implement HR initiatives; lead HR teams; and proactively partner with executives within her client groups. Ms. Yancy was recently Vice President, Human Resources Business Partner with SunTrust Bank supporting multiple clients within the Diversified Commercial Bank division. In her role she serves as the HR lead on key division talent and compensation initiatives and manages the people strategies and organization design efforts within her client groups.

Prior to joining SunTrust, Ms. Yancy was the Director of Human Resources for Technology, Strategy & Operations at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS). In this role, Ms. Yancy led a team responsible for delivery of corporate HR initiatives as well as divisional HR support to 1700+ employees across multiple business units. While at TBS she led the people strategy for a $25 million system implementation, managed a divisional rotational program, and supported her client groups in significant organizational redesign.

Prior to joining TBS in 2007, Ms. Yancy held several progressively more responsible roles within HR at Lincoln Financial Group (LFG). During her tenure at LFG, she supported multiple diverse clients groups across four divisions and multiple geographies. Key accomplishments include leading the implementation of manager and employee self service across the enterprise, developing the people strategy for key divisional mergers, acquisitions & divestitures, and leading the people strategy for a $120 million in-source of IT Infrastructure. Prior to joining LFG she was a Senior HR Representative with Ashland Chemical where she supported 42 chemical distribution facilities across four regions within the US. Additionally Ms. Yancy served as a first chair negotiator and managed the grievance process with the Teamsters at organized facilities within her regions. She has also held HR roles with GE Capital, Ikon Office Solutions and Georgia Tech.

A native of Atlanta, Ms. Yancy holds a BA degree in Economics from Northwestern University and an MBA in Personnel Employee Relations from Georgia State University. Additionally she holds the Senior Professional Human Resources (SPHR) certification. A former Board member of the Junior Achievement of Delaware Valley, the Philadelphia Police Athletic League, the Lincoln Financial Group Foundation Board, and the Atlanta Housing Authority. Ms. Yancy continues to be active in several organizations including The Links, Inc., and SHRM Atlanta. Additionally Ms. Yancy serves as a mentor to young professionals seeking careers in Human Resources.
